Big Brown injured, retires

Merely two weeks before the Breeder’s Cup Classic on October 25th at Santa Anita where the Rick Dutrow (cocaine phene) trained horse was set to take on Curlin and perhaps Casino Drive in a classic racing matchup with Horse of the Year stakes on the line, Big Brown has injured his front right foot during a morning workout which will need MONTHS to heal and has now been retired.

This news sucks because as a horse racing fan I was really looking forward to the first great match race since Seabiscuit defeated War Admiral way back in the day in the midst of the Great Depression. It would’ve been very coincidental if Big Brown and Curlin met near the end of the year in November or December in the match race even as the country’s economy recedes into perhaps the next Great Depression.

I’ve never had the privilege to witness a match race in my lifetime and I was really hoping to witness this one because it could’ve been very good. Now Curlin will have a clear path to his second consecutive Horse of the Year award and will continue to cement his legacy as one of the best horses in history. I believe he would’ve won the race and the award anyways but it would’ve meant more to beat Big Brown who was supposedly looking superb in warmups.

It sucks.
