The General’s Power 16 — week 3

Well, another week of college basketball is behind us and a little moving and shaking took place this week in the rankings. After Duke lost to Wake Forest on Wednesday, the Demon Deacons went on to lose to winless in ACC Georgia Tech. Pittsburgh fell to Villanova on Wednesday as well but rebounded with a nice come-from-behind win over a very desperate Notre Dame squad at home. In other news, UConn, Louisville, Oklahoma and Marquette continued their respective winning streaks.

  1. Connecticut — If the Huskies get that play (from Providence game) from Hasheem Thabeet who had a triple-double and Stanley Robinson, this team will be very, very difficult to beat.
  2. Louisville — Won despite surrendering 26 turnovers to West Virginia on Saturday.
  3. Pittsburgh — Whenever Dejuan Blair stays out of foul trouble, the Panthers are a force. Blair proved that Saturday when he posted 23 points and 22 rebounds against the Irish.
  4. North Carolina — The Heels seem to be rounding back into form a bit with three straight conference wins.
  5. Marquette — The Golden Eagles make the biggest jump in this week’s rankings as they continue to soar in Big East play. The Eagles are now 8-0 and tied with Louisville for first place. Jerel McNeal is playing as well as any guard in the country.
  6. Oklahoma — Playing in the weak Big 12, the Sooners aren’t impressing me with their wins.
  7. Wake Forest — The Deacons are a little inconsistent but their talent and worthiness can’t be disputed after wins against UNC and Duke when both were ranked No. 1 in the country.
  8. Duke — The Blue Devils showed their true colors as they were beaten convincingly by the Demon Deacons despite the Deacon’s own shoddy play down the stretch.
  9. Michigan State — The Spartans continued their dominance of the Big 10 over the week.
  10. Xavier
  11. Villanova — The Wildcats scored a huge win over the week as they defeated Pittsburgh.
  12. Purdue — The Boilermakers are beginning to show the promise that had many analysts picking them in the top 5 pre-season rankings.
  13. Texas — The Longhorns are a talented team that looks to be on the verge of hitting their stride.
  14. Syracuse — The Orange lost a tough one to Providence but should get Rautins and Devendorf back sometime this week and look for them to bounce back strongly.
  15. Butler — Holding steady at 15
  16. Clemson — The Tigers notched a couple ACC wins to get themselves off the schnide.
