The UFC will debut on Versus in just about 10 days and on Wednesday they announced a card that features some the promotion’s top talent — including a Jon Jones vs. Brandon Vera main event and Junior Dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga heavyweight contender tilt.
The Versus 1 event will take place on Sunday, March 21st live from Bloomfield, Colorado. The expectation is a sold out crowd and a large television audience. The hope is the event brings a new audience to the UFC and the Versus network which will help sell their WEC brand.
Rounding out the televised portion of the card is an exciting, hard-hitting heavyweight tilt between Cheick Kongo (24-6-1) and Paul Buentello (25-11) as well as a middleweight slugfest between Alessio Sakara (18-7) and James Irvin (14-5).
Also featured on the card is lightweight Clay Guida, welterweight John Howard and heavyweight Vladimir Matyushenko.
Despite a tremendous card, it’s the Brandon Vera verse Jon Jones fight that steals the show. Jones is perhaps the best current prospect the UFC has. At just 21 years of age, the light heavyweight is as talented as they come and on the fast track to a title shot in the division.
That is if he can get through Vera, a fighter the UFC used to see as their top prospect. It’s like a look into the past for Vera, fighting a guy that is being hyped like he was a few years ago.
It’s going to be good.
