UPDATE: The UFC will move Ben Saunders into Alves’ place to fight Fitch. Saunders, a welterweight, was scheduled to fight Jake Ellenberger at UFC 111 in a separate bout. No word yet on whether Ellenberger will see a replacement fighter or be scrapped.
Thiago Alves has been a late scratch from UFC 111: St.-Pierre vs. Hardy due to a CAT Scan revealing a brain irregularity.
With the weigh-ins for Saturday’s event tomorrow, this news comes as a shock to the MMA community as Alves who was scheduled to rematch fellow welterweight Jon Fitch in a matchup of two of the top four or five 170 lbers in the world, has fought multiple times in the UFC without any apparent physical issues.
Now with barely a day left until the weigh-ins the UFC is left in a difficult spot to find a replacement for Fitch or to scrap a fight that was being looked at as the odds on favorite for Fight of the Night honors.
Stay tuned for any updates on Alves’ health.
