Mariners vs. Royals 5.10.14 Lineups, Pre-game Notes: James Jones leading off

James Jones gets his first career major-league start in the leadoff position Saturday as the Mariners look to rebound after last night’s 6-1 loss and put themselves in position to win a fifth straight series. It would be the first time since May 2011.

Jones is hitting .455 (5-for-11) through the first seven games of his big-league career. Saturday will be just his third career start. So far Mariners’ manager Lloyd McClendon has been impressed with what he’s seen from the 25-year-old outfielder.

“I like what I see, I don’t think that he is over-matched at the plate,” said McClendon. “He has the ability to put the bat on the ball, gets good jumps in the outfield I’ve been impressed.

“He’s a prototypical type leadoff guy. Give him his chance and see what he can do.”

Meanwhile, third baseman Kyle Seager is out of the lineup for a second straight game as he battles the flu bug. Seager is feeling better but McClendon thinks he needs at least Saturday to fully recover.
