The Mariners have recalled 1b/dh Logan Morrison from AAA Tacoma after 19 days on rehabilitation assignment and placed Justin Smoak (left quad) on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 10.
Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon had said that Smoak would not need the DL as recently as Tuesday and had his first baseman out of the lineup for four consecutive starts, five out of six, but also used him as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning in all but last night’s contest.
Because of that use, Smoak must still sit out another two weeks before he is eligible to come off the disabled list. McClendon did comment that the quad was a lingering issue for Smoak and affected his hitting in the past couple of weeks especially from the right side. Smoak will get a week off before going down to AAA Tacoma to get some at-bats.
In other news, you will notice that Michael Saunders is out of the lineup again after returning Tuesday after missing three consecutive starts with a tight shoulder. According to McClendon, Saunders came away from Tuesday’s game “a little banged up” and is again day-to-day (shoulder).
Seattle had its three-game winning streak snapped last night by the Yankees and counter a matchup with New York’s ace Masahiro Tanaka (9-1, 2.02 ERA) with a lineup stacked with seven lefties, including six in a row. So much for worrying about stacking lefties, eh Lloyd?
