Mariners vs. Padres 6.16.14 Lineups, Pre-game Notes: Passing of Tony Gwynn Casts Long Shadow over GM 1

The Mariners and Padres open up a split 4-game series Monday with the first two games to be played at Safeco Field before playing the final two at Petco. However, earlier today came the report that former San Diego Padres Hall-of-Fame first baseman Tony Gwynn passed away at the age of 54 after a bout with cancer. Not only does Gywnn have obvious connections with the Padres, but also with the Mariners as Chris Gwynn, Tony’s younger brother, is the Mariners’ minor-league director of player development.

Chris Young will look to bounce back after taking a 4-2 loss against the Yankees on Wednesday. Young pitched five innings and surrendered four runs on seven hits and two walks.

The Mariners spent about 30 minutes working on bunting prior to batting practice. The entire starting lineup plus pitchers Felix Hernandez and Erasmo Ramirez who are scheduled for the Wednesday and Thursday starts in San Diego respectively, also participated. Each player attempted 15-20 bunts off a ball machine.

Some of the news coming out of Lloyd McClendon’s pre-game session with the media is that Logan Morrison is fine after being taken out of yesterday’s game when he slammed his bat against the dugout wall and had a piece of it fire back and cut him over his left eye. He needed five stitches, but as you can see he is starting tonight. Fellow 1b Justin Smoak (quad) will head out on a rehab stint with Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday. Smoak said his leg is feeling really good and is ready to get back out there. He is eligible to come back of the 15-day disabled list on June 25.

Michael Saunders and Corey Hart have also been taking batting practice and will join Smoak in Tacoma by the weekend according to McClendon.
