Mariners vs. Red Sox 6.24 Lineups, Pre-game Notes: Looking to finish off month of June the right way

The Mariners, riding a four-game win streak, are set to take on the Red Sox in the second game of the teams’ three-game series at Safeco Field. It is the only trip the Red Sox are scheduled to make to Seattle in 2014. After taking game one 12-3 behind the performances of Felix Hernandez (seven innings, two earned on six hits, no walks and six strikeouts) and Logan Morrison (4-for-4 with a walk, two HRs, four RBI and three runs scored), the M’s can surely expect some added fight out of the defending champions.

That shouldn’t bother the Mariners much. So far over the month of June, the M’s are 14-8, tied with Milwaukee and Kansas City for the most wins and hold a major-league best 2.40 ERA. If the staff holds to form over the next six games, it will set a club record for lowest monthly ERA. The current mark is 2.80 set in July of 1991. With a winning June, the team will secure its first consecutive winning months since July-August 2012 and first winning June since 2010 (14-13).

All promising signs for a M’s squad looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2001, a span of 13 seasons and counting. That’s a long time.
