Mariners vs. Orioles 7.26.14 Lineups, Pre-game Notes

A random Saturday 1:10 start at Safeco Field has been greeted by a cloudless sky and temps in the 70’s. The Mariners are looking to halt a four-game losing skid in game three of four against the Orioles, the penultimate game of this seven-game homestand in which Seattle is a sterling 1-4.

That is getting the job done right there folks. And if you weren’t aware already, the run of 10 losses in 14 games has dropped Seattle 1.5 games behind the Yankees for the second American League wild card. Now, the Yankees (and the Blue Jays and the Royals for that matter) are not world beaters, but if the M’s don’t start hitting their second half stride to make a push for 90-plus wins, they may as well start going young. Say sayonora to Endy Chavez, Chris Young, Corey Hart and Logan Morrison. I still say they bounce back, though.

As far as pre-game news is concerned. There are two items: LHP James Paxton will be extended to 75-80 pitches (conceivably 5 innings) in his start with Class AAA Tacoma Sunday. He will then travel with the team to CLE and BAL on their six-game East Coast road swing with a following step still yet to be determined (at least publicly) according to McClendon. Same goes for OF Michael Saunders (oblique strain) as he will also travel with the team. Saunders reportedly did some tee work in the past few days, but status remains “it’s going to be awhile.” I would anticipate late August.

Here is the lineup for Seattle against RHP Bud Norris (8-6, 3.78 ERA) of Baltimore. Old Bud is coming off a pretty good game (6.2 IP 8H 2ER 2BB 2K) in win over Angels, but has historically had some trouble with the M’s (1-2 with a 5.09 ERA in 17.2 innings). So we shall see. Meanwhile there will be a Manny Machado sighting at the Safe today. He has been dealing with a back issue. On a personal note, he’s probably my favorite player in the game not named Felix Hernandez.
