Mariners vs. White Sox 8.8.14 Lineups, Pre-game Notes: Bloomquist done for year

The Mariners enter game four of their nine-game homestand Friday night with Hisashi Iwakuma set to take the mound against the White Sox. It will be Iwakuma’s first start since pitching 7.2 innings of one run baseball against the Orioles in a 1-0 loss.

The big news out of the Mariner camp this afternoon is the announcement that utility infield Willie Bloomquist will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his knee Friday. Bloomquist injured his knee in a game against the New York Mets July 23, was placed on the 15-day disabled list the following day and has been out of action since. Because the knee was taken longer than anticipated to show improvement, Bloomquist had arthoscopic surgery and it was immediately determined that the microfracture process was needed.

The hope is that Bloomquist will be able to return for spring training. Bloomquist is on a two-year contract after signing with the M’s during the offseason. Right now McClendon believes that the team is set with Brad Miller and Chris Taylor in that role.

“I think (Miller) will do a fine job for us,” McClendon said.

The team decided to recall Lucas Luetge to take the place of LHP Roenis Elias who was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma postgame Thursday in the hope that they can control the amount of innings Elias accumulates. In Double-A last season Elias pitched 130 innings. During Thursday’s start he surpassed that total, currently sitting at 134.2.

The decision to bring up Luetge gives the team a 25th man that could be an option in the bullpen. Had the team brought up their Sunday starter now, he wouldn’t be a serviceable member of the team until Sunday. This way, they get a player they can use for two days and then bring up their starter Sunday.

“You just never know,” McClendon said. “Hopefully, he can come in and get an out for us.”

Here is the Mariners lineup that will face LHP Jose Quintana (6-7, 3.04 ERA, 133 ERA+):
